THE MOTHERS

I’ve been avoiding writing this review because I want to do the book justice but no synopsis or review could fully summarize or compare to this book. It’s amazing.⠀

THE MOTHERS is a story about race, motherhood, sexuality, religion and church communities, family, and what it means to be a woman. ⠀

CW: abortion, teenage pregnancy, abuse, suicide⠀

This wasn’t a light read to say the least. It was heavy, deep, and really left you with a lot to think about.⠀

Nadia is 17 years old when she gets pregnant with the preacher’s son Luke and decides to have an abortion. This changes everything with Luke and the influence this has on their lives lasts years later.⠀

Some people didn’t love the collective voice of The Mothers from the church that sort of act like narrators but for me it added another element to think about religion and church communities and how they can sometimes do a great deal of harm in the shame and judgement they inflict on others. It just added another layer that made Nadia’s story so deep and interesting. I loved reading this book but the discussion I’ve had after is what has made this book truly wonderful.⠀

My six word review:⠀
Both thought provoking and heart wrenching⠀
