An author reviewed this book saying “will break your heart and put it back together again” and that is exactly what DEAR EDWARD did to me.
Summary: 12 year old Eddie is the sole survivor of a freak plane crash. He lost his parents, his brother, his childhood, and his innocence. After the crash, Edward goes to live with his aunt and uncle, and his life goes on. At such a young age, he struggles with so much and it’s so heartbreaking to be in his mind, young, but not longer innocent. The sole comfort for him is a girl his age next door named Shay. They both need each other, and quickly these two become best friends. As Edward grows up with his aunt and uncle, he begins to heal and learn more about what really happened that day he lost everything. He begins to rebuild a community through his therapist, Principal at school, gym teacher, neighbors, and his aunt and uncle. He builds a new life and finds a new path for himself proving life goes on even after trauma and tragedy.
My book club all really enjoyed this book, and we fell more in love with the symbolism and deeper message of DEAR EDWARD. If you can get the book club copy from Barnes and Noble for some really thought provoking questions! I give this easily ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars, I absolutely loved it. I love the way the author switched timelines, and we could connect with so many stories on the plane, while seeing how Edward begins to process all those stories himself through the letters.
My six word review:
Heartbreakingly beautiful coming of age story.
Trigger Warnings: mentions of suicide, depression, anxiety, PTSD, traumatic event, plane crash
