The world building is insane. It is so intense and deep and just wonderful to read. Take the first 50 pages slow there is so much packed in!

Then let’s talk about Poppy. Her destiny is as the Maiden, a sacrificial virgin who basically isn’t seen, spoken to, or obviously touched by anyone. She’s being saved to help others in her community ascend at a TBD time. She’s protected at all costs and when her guard is murdered a new one comes up and he is a fine specimen of a man. Hawke knows she’s to be protected and is the Maiden and should be referred to as such and yet he calls her Princess *swoon* and shows her what life can be.
