This book needs a TW to start.
TW: sexual assault, sexual misconduct in the workplace, mentions of suicide, detailed descriptions of method of suicide
Okay we got the important part out of the way! This book was so good! I read it so quickly the other day and it was such a ride! I did end up only giving it ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 stars because I had a few struggles with the writing format that detracted from the story, and it needed a major trigger warning.
Synopsis: Gina, a freelance investigative reporter, is sent an email from a potential source, about something “terrible” happening to her and others at the place she works, a massive TV company. Before Gina gets a chance to reach out and learn more, the source dies on a vacation to Aruba. Gina is intrigued, and begins to unpack the story of this source, the anchor of the TV company, and other women at this company.
The author takes us from Ginas perspective, to the perspective of a lawyer at the major TV company who somehow weasels his way into being the lawyer paying off the women the anchor assaulted. He gets the executives of the company into a sticky financial mess, and pays off the women for their silence. However, some women aren’t going quietly as easily, and after another victim ends up dead, the lawyer and Gina know that something worse is happening. This story is deep and complex with so many little details it’s hard to grasp how much work was clearly put into this book. It was so well researched and is such an incredible story, it’s a nail biter to the very last page.
It’s so relevant with the Me Too movement as well, I just wish the layout was cleaner, maybe with more specific voices for character switches, and dates to start chapters. It would’ve made the book easier to follow and keep track of. By the end you know what’s happening and it’s more obvious but it gets a bit clouded in the middle.
Despite only 3 1/2 stars I 10/10 would recommend you read this!!! My six word review:
Gripping to the very last page!
