I won this copy of The Best Laid Plans from @bookishfirst and I was so excited when it arrived! I absolutely inhaled it. After reading the sneak peak when I entered I was hooked.
This is a YA novel about Keely as she struggles through her last year of high school, navigating all the rules of sex and virginity and social circle drama as she develops a crush on a college boy at work!! She feels inexperienced in dating and sexual activities compared to her group of friends, and is worried what this guy nicknamed James Dean would think if he knew she was a virgin. She asks her very best friend Andrew to help her gain some experience, but it opens up a whole new can of worms between these two best friends all leading up to a cinematic prom night!
I really enjoyed this, it was written in a very YA tone. Sometimes YA novels are written in a tone of voice that is more educated and experienced, but this voice felt very authentic. You could hear and see the immaturity and the obsession with what everyone else is doing in relation to themselves (which is common with teens) in the voices of the characters. There were many times I was like “OMG it’s so dang obvious what’s happening!!” But the characters were clueless because teens can be pretty clueless about what’s going on around them sometimes.
I loved the story idea, it was unique and funny. This was a great romcom, but definitely more mature in some aspects. It so accurately depicts teen drinking and partying, all the bullying and slut shaming, and gossiping. The whole theme to me was about how awful high schoolers are to each other regarding sex. As a girl you are a slut if you do, a prude if you don’t, and shamed no matter what. This would make a great @netflix series!! I overall really enjoyed this book, I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars!
THE BEST LAID PLANS releases April 2020!
My six word review:
An honest high school love story
