#bookstagramreccomends another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ book!
Before I begin, I will be talking about race and I am a white female with a fair amount of privilege. I am not an expert at talking about race and I will be using the terms used in the book which is set post Great Depression 1900’s Back country America. They referred to the blue family as “blues” and “colored” and the family was not allowed anywhere “whites” were allowed despite them being white when given medication to ease their anemia.
The book woman of troublesome creek was so intriguing. It is based off a real family of blue people (which is actually just a blood anemia) and based off of the book women in Kentucky where they would deliver books from libraries to people to help spread reading and education after the Great Depression. In this story, these two true stories meet for one great lesson on race, inclusion, education, and literacy as one of these “blues” as they are called is a book woman!
I really loved this book. It was fascinating learning about this type of anemia the family has and how this simple medical issue created a lifelong struggle for them. They were treated as “colored” in the 1800’s and 1900’s where that was appropriate language and frequently in the book the references to this family are incredibly racist.
Ah this book was just so fascinating and sparked so much in my head about how we talk about race. I’m no expert but if you would like to educate my, my comments and DM’s are open!
My six word review:
We are not so different underneath
