The Exact Opposite of Okay

Holy mother of God. This book. I am sobbing like a baby because of this book. This book broke my heart, and tore me apart, and was just so utterly relatable and heartbreaking and raw and honest… I can’t even put into words how I feel about this book. It is incredible. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ a must read.

TW: sex, underage drinking, bullying/cyber bullying, slut shaming, SEVERE victim blaming, brief mentions of suicidal thoughts

The main character Izzy, is an 18-year-old high school senior, and also an orphan. She lives with her amazingly open minded and accepting grandma, and she has two best friends, a great sense of humor and a talent for writing. Izzy enjoys having consensual, protected sex, and after a night of said one night stands where a photo was taken without permission and then posted to the internet, her control and power in her life is completely ripped from her. The website dedicated to her being a whore, and consists of a nude photo of her, the original photo of her having sex, and thousands of hate comments, goes viral, and quickly the whole school, her community, and the media are all coming after her for having consensual, protected sex.

The slut shaming, the bullying, and the victim blaming throughout this book is absolutely infuriating. But what makes it so upsetting, is knowing that this happens (not maybe on this scale) to show many girls around the world for the exact same thing. They had sex. They were not ashamed of having sex. And the world tried to destroy them for it.

I have so much to say about this book, but it truly won’t all fit in a caption. Let’s talk more about it, and let’s have a conversation at this book so wonderfully starts. “Because the way the world treats teenage girls — as sluts, as objects, as bitches — is not okay.
It’s the exact opposite of okay.”

My six word review:
It’s 2019, let’s stop slut shaming.
